About the Band

Ho-Hai-Yan Indie Music Awards

Every year Fulong Beach on the northern end of Taiwan becomes a mecca for indie bands participating in the island's largest battle of the bands. Since beginning in 2000, the festival has featured bands of all genres including indie rock, punk, ska, metal, pop, electronica, folk as well as various fusion styles. Furthermore, the competition reflects this diversity with a list of finalists that has included 88 BALAZ, TIZZY BAC, CHILDREN SUCKER and most recently WHITE EYES. Ho-Hai-Yan, a name taken from an aboriginal phrase signifying the ocean, has now come to be synonymous with having good summertime fun while supporting local independent talent.

PACIFICTION REVIEW:

The 2005 battle of the bands held at Fulong Beach consisted of a group of finalists differing sounds from alternative to nu-metal to funk, pop and indie rock as well as introducing a couple waiguo, or Taiwan-based foreigner, artists to the foray. Dance funk band MILK, a long-running expat feature on the island, properly kicks off the party with a body moving disco number that shows no lack of wailing guitar. THE COACH rolls into their local flavor rock with a impassioned fury. JINDOWIN, another group comprised of foreign talent, mixes elements of hard rock and nu-metal which catches a nice groove. The 2005 winners, TOTEM shows off their knack for making fun songs from blending local taike with pop rock. Alternative female songstress LEA leads the modern rock of her band NO KEY to higher places. FORMULA rumbles in with wild tribal sounds and shouts that meld with funky beats and guitar rhythms. LIGHT OF CITY offer some Taiwanese hip hop with slight crossover turntablism making use of sampled traditional sounds. Closing the compilation is SO WHAT, one of the longest running Taiwanese pop rock bands to be featured here. Another great collection of beach party rock songs from Taiwan that will take you right to all the excitement that gathers around Fulong Beach every summer.
