PACIFICTION REVIEW:This collection of various indie pop songs ranging in style from acoustic folk to laptop electro makes up the soundtrack to Taiwan's new and exciting independent music gathering the Grass Festival. Complete with studio recordings of many of the bands highlighted at this year's past fest, the compilation offers a glimpse of the island's current indie scene with a couple delightful contributions by Hong Kong artists.
Opening with the light-hearted acoustic version of NYLAS' "Love is Free," the album promises not to disappoint. The eerie vocals, acoustic slapping and sorrowful violins of Natural Q are an interesting listen. FRECKLE makes a cute appearance with singer Ben Ben's Sunday morning coffee vibe. Waking things up a bit is MY LITTLE AIRPORT from Hong Kong with twee pop electronica sounds. Reemerging as a solo acoustic act, ex-BAD DAUGHTER vocalist VERAQUEEN shows that she has lost none of her charm. Telephone Booth gives us "Sputnik," an ethereal space pop song with a tribal groove. Neo-mod/britpop group 1976 contributes a lo-fi acoustic version of their hit "Star." 929 make some soothing acoustic lounge blended with bongo beats and electric guitar inflections. The 1960's pop sound of the MARSHMALLOW KISSES enchants us with dreamy choruses over flighty harpsichord and flute reveries. ZHE WEI TAI TAI make some amazing melodically intertwining happy pop while DOLLY'S PILLBOX give us a bittersweet rock tune. RADIOBEAR sums up the over-all theme of this year's Grass Festival with their inspirational ditty about life, family and growing up while STOCKING leads us to the sunset of a summer day filled with music. If you're interested in any various types of indie pop, or if your interested in one of the most charming, heartwarming music scenes in the world, the Grass Festival is there... beckoning you. |
